My neurologist at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin, USA, was Doctor John Fleming. Dr. Fleming is now retired and is about 80 years old. He once told me that as a young man “they” used to surf on a beach someplace past Waianae on Oahu (Makaha?).
John told me that one of his ancestors by the name of James (presumably Fleming) had been in the party that arrested Queen Liliuokalani during the 1893 overthrow. John said that the queen knew James personally and during the event said something to him to the effect, “Why do you do this to me, Kimo?” My Dr. John Fleming informed me that the nickname Kimo is a nickname for James.
One other thing that Dr. Fleming told me was that someone among his ancestors stole some valuable items from the palace or an associated building but that the family returned the items in shame a few decades later.
I have lost track of Dr. John Fleming these days. I was wondering if his ancestors came from the Fleming family of Maui.

Sorry, email address is scepanskijc@hotmail.com.
By the way, Poka Laenui or Hayden Burgess is a friend of mine. He and his wife are lifelong residents of Waianae, Oahu. Poka is an attorney and an activist among the “de-colonization” movement.

Hi John,
Dr. John Fleming is alive and well and continues to live in Madison. He is my Mom’s first cousin – his Father William “Bill” Fleming and my Grandfather, James Fleming were brothers.
We are all decedents of the Fleming family of Maui. The first Fleming arrived in Maui in 1889.
My Mom, Lani, was the oldest of her generation, and she died in ‘21. She was very close to cousin John and would call him whenever she had a medical question. He is a really wonderful guy.
There are still many Flemings living in Maui-
It’s hard to know the whole story but James Fleming was an auctioneer- the Queen’s belongings were sold at auction. Various family members had furniture from the palace- I believe everything was returned. Its a sad history.
